“Just do the thing.” That’s what my intellectual node says
“You’ve got nothing important to say,” says my inner critic.
“Sit down and start typing…anything”
That really is the key, people. Just put your computer, typewriter, note pad—whatever—in front of you and start typing.
“Today I woke up angry again…”
It doesn’t matter.
And yet that is my biggest writing flaw. I convince myself I have nothing to say, but that’s because I haven’t started talking, as it were.
What’s this then?
This blog is going to be a free-flowing mind-dump. I’m breaking it down into a few categories.
· Theatre: All the world’s a stage
· Living: More things in heaven and earth
· Writing: Write till your ink be dry
· Family: Is all your family within
· Burbling: The mind’s midden heap
This blog is not meant to do anything but give you something to read, if you want to.
I am not some guru of anything. And the idea of self-promotion makes my gorge rise.
Unfortunately, as a freelance creative, I must pretend to be a guru—or at least admit to the things I’m good at, and I live and die with self-promotion. Maybe I’ll say something you haven’t thought about before, or something that enrages you, or makes you laugh.
Theatre
When I was 14, I stepped onto a stage at Indian Hills Junior High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. I played a bully and knocked the pennies out of Tom Sawyers’ hand. I was hooked. Since then, I’ve acted, directed, written, produced, and taught theatre.
My thoughts on theatre and teaching theatre will be here.
Living
I am close to rounding six decades here. I have a fair amount of chemistry issues: ADD, Anxiety Disorder, Depression…the usual stuff. The person in the mirror has never looked like me. I find this existence fascinating, befuddling, and, at times, a cruel joke.
I gots lots ‘bout livin’.
Writing
I’m a teacher of writer. I’m a writer. I have poems, short stores, long tales, sketches, dirty limericks, pleasant haikus, and sexy sonnets in my bag. I’ve been writing and performing sketches and monologues in live performance for twenty years now.
Writing is the electricity that charges my heart.
Family
My family is a wonderful clown car of oddities. We’ve got Chip of the One Eye, DadDad the Copperhead Kicker, Opal&Dean Mean&Clean, Jawonda the Southern Bellabee, Larry the Spy, SamIsaac the Pentecostal Devil, and BananaGrandma. And of course, Me the Lost Liberal Freak—my dad’s term, not mine.
All raconteurs.
Burbling
Some things have no category.
Final Thoughts
So that’s what this is about. I’ll write stuff. You’ll read it…or not. Hopefully you’ll comment on it.
Even more hopefully, you’ll suggest topics for me to burble about.
At some point I will have a Patreon out there that will parse stuff down and offer up some exclusive stuff, both writing and graphical.
As always, feel free to enter the conversation with comments.
